A dance that traveled
Swing grew up with jazz. The Lindy Hop came out of Harlem in the late 1920s, and the Savoy Ballroom was the room people meant when they talked about it. The bands carried it across the country: East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Carolina Shag, Balboa. After the war the rooms got quieter. Then the dances came back, and they did not stay in New York. There are weekly socials now from South Texas to Seoul, Stockholm, and Sydney. A meetup is still a simple thing. A clear floor, some music, and people willing to dance with whoever asks.
